From Sheet Metal Worker to International Commissioning Pro – The Story of Tomáš Novotný

Our team is full of inspiring personalities. But only a few spread good vibes as naturally as Tomáš Novotný. Optimism, dedication, and the courage to try new things describe him best. When we asked if he’d like to share his story on our career blog, he didn’t hesitate for a second. As he puts it, sometimes you just have to lay your cards on the table.

Today, Tomáš works as a toolmaker and commissioning technician. His path to this role has been anything but linear—shaped by international assignments, hands-on experience, and real-world challenges.

How Curiosity, Commitment, and International Experience Shape a Career

Tomáš completed his vocational training in Lutín, Czech Republic, where he learned the trade of a sheet metal worker. After graduating, he wanted to explore more and gain new experiences. That is what took him to England, more precisely to Blackpool. The early days were tough. He worked as a general helper in various production facilities, including a pizza factory, a salmon farm, and a potato farm. The work was physically demanding, but looking back, it was a true school of life. As his English improved, new opportunities opened up. He moved to an amusement park that hosted large events such as birthdays, corporate parties, and bachelor celebrations. He started in service and later took over maintenance of the attractions. With a smile, he says today: “Luckily, no one has fallen out of a ride after my shift.”

Back Home and Fully into Engineering

After returning to the Czech Republic, Tomáš was able to use his language skills right away and quickly found his place. As he puts it, the job found him. In 2014, he joined weba as an assistant toolmaker and developed step by step. His career gained new momentum when he received a job offer in Germany. There, he worked as a toolmaker for about a year. After completing an intensive German course, he moved up again and took on the role of deputy foreman. In this position, he gained several years of valuable experience. During that time, he also worked extensively with the SoftZone system, knowledge he still uses today.

Eventually, in coordination with management, he returned to the Czech Republic. Today, he works as a commissioning technician. Thanks to his international experience, he regularly travels abroad, supports customers on site, and oversees the handover of tools directly at their facilities.

Over the years at weba, Tomáš has built a strong connection to the company. What he values most is the variety in his work. Every day brings new technical challenges and the opportunity to develop solutions. The team also plays an important role. Reliable colleagues and a positive working environment make a real difference. This not only improves efficiency but also increases satisfaction in everyday work. With his typical sense of humor, he says: “There’s always something to do here, and something is always happening.” That is exactly what keeps the job exciting. Every solved challenge creates a sense of achievement and shows that the work truly matters.

Variety as a Success Factor

What Tomáš values most about his job is the variety. No project is the same, and every task comes with new challenges.

For him, the most important moment is when a project is successfully completed and the customer is satisfied. That feeling confirms that the effort is worth it.

Free Time with a Focus on Technology and Family

In his private life, his passion is cars. In his spare time, he actively works on vehicles and is currently building his own small workshop.

At the same time, his family plays a central role. Spending time with his partner, the children, and the dog is a fixed part of his daily life. Staying active comes naturally to him. In summer, he often goes mountain biking, while in winter he heads to the mountains for snowboarding. And when he wants to switch off, a long walk with the dog is often enough. Just getting outside and clearing his head.

A Quote That Describes Him

“Every action is rewarded accordingly.”

A statement with a touch of humor and at the same time a clear message. Every decision comes with consequences. Tomáš is one of those people who do not avoid challenges but actively use them to move forward.

His Advice to the Younger Generation

Tomáš keeps it simple: “Just get stuck in. Fewer and fewer people want to work with their hands, and that is a problem.”

He is living proof that commitment and courage pay off. Those who are willing to take responsibility and explore new paths will continue to grow. That is exactly why he now works internationally and supports the implementation of new tools.

Tomáš represents a career path that does not follow a textbook but is shaped by initiative, hands-on experience, and the willingness to look beyond the obvious. From his start in a skilled trade to international assignments and his current role in direct customer interaction, his journey shows what is possible when opportunities are recognized and seized. For us as a company, this is a key success factor. People who think ahead, take action, and assume responsibility move projects forward and create real added value for our customers.
